Monthly Goals: June

I need to hang one of those prints that say “I refuse to sink” up in my brain. Also, blog more often. GOAL: Finish and publish posts the same day I start them. I began this one on Sunday. Things have changed a bit since then, but luckily I never made it past the introduction, so there is nothing to rewrite.

On my last Weekly Wishes post, all the way back on May 19, I talked about how I needed to take better care of myself. I don’t know if I’ve made a lot of progress in that regard, but I do know I moved twice, I spent a week with a kitten, I completed a design project, I braved three really bad days last week after I was told it wouldn’t work out with the flat I’m living in at the moment, I booked a homestay.com room without seeing it first — standard procedure for the site, and the important part is that I made a decision — and I’m (mostly) set until July 13, when I’ll have to move again.

The thing is, I’m ready to settle down. Not settle, but find a place I genuinely like and that I can sign a lease on for a good half year or even a complete one. In order to do that, I need money and I need a job. My freelance work needs to be my top priority, and I need to start applying to full-time jobs that can give me a bit of stability but allow me to run my small business on top. And so:

MONTHLY GOALS: JUNE [link-up]

1. Write up my resume. I’ve been approaching this as redoing it, and I think I’ll do a better job if I start from scratch. On paper, even. I’m going to take the chance to poke around InDesign while I’m at it.

2. Write a few cover letters for different types of roles that can be easily customized. Writing too many emails I have a personal interest in in a short period of time is hard on me, and I need to streamline it as much as possible.

3. Complete current design projects.

4. Raise the prices on my Etsy shops and my photo services page. This will happen on June 15, and I’ll be raising my prices by a good 30% at least. I’m switching to listing in GBP as well. Now would be a great time to hire me if you’re in need of a blog design, a media kit or a logo!

5. Streamline listing photographs and photography products on Etsy so I can delegate the task if need be. Catch up on picture editing and stay on top of editing new photographs.

6. Blog daily Monday – Friday and optionally on weekends. (You guys know I like my easy weekend posts.) Complete a schedule starting today and running at least two weeks ahead.

7. Find a new photography product supplier and printer. These can be the same or different, though I’d prefer to find a printer somewhere I can physically go pick up my prints as opposed to having them shipped to me. If anyone has any suggestions, I am all ears. I’m hoping to find some places that will allow me to print a couple of custom samples before I go ahead and order more. In the medium term, I want to begin doing craft shows and build up my stock, so it could mean quite a bit of business for whoever I end up picking. Fingers crossed I can get a place or two to reach out to me and/or agree to it!

8. Order new business cards! So important, y’all.

9. And of course, the serious paperwork things: get a national insurance number and go from there.

10. Enjoy London. Go for walks. Stretch more often. Seek out those moments when I’m just utterly, ridiculously happy to be here, because they’re exhilarating and I don’t get them as often as I’d like to.

A round ten goals for a hopefully successful month! What are your plans for June?

These are great goals! I definitely recommend making a strong cover letter you can customize for different jobs. It makes the whole process much easier!

    • Lix Hewett

I know! I’ve done the whole shebang with other types of prewritten content before. With cover letters though I find it so hard to be the right amount of personal. I always end up wondering if maybe my letter was too casual or too generic or too *something*.

  • Ellie

I absolutely HATE cover letters. Having to talk about myself is not my best quality. I always feel so cocky.

    • Lix Hewett

I’m a bit the opposite of that – when I’m feeling good about myself, I have no problem talking myself up, but half the time I feel insecure/underqualified and the other half the time I feel like I’m being annoying or bothering people. :(

  • Paulina Dombrowski

I am working on my resume too this month. I hate having to do it too.

    • Lix Hewett

      It is the worst.

Thank you! I find cover letters SO stressful but they’re also necessary so good luck to us both on that!

  • Raewyn Smith

Those are amazing goals!! Good luck!!!

    • Lix Hewett

Thank you! I’ll need it. /o

  • Miss Angie

Great goals! You should link up with our goals linky too! :D

    • Lix Hewett

Ooh yes, I forgot about that one (since this was originally supposed to go up LAST Monday… oops).

  • Krista Ketterhagen

It sounds like you have everything all in order for your goals. Thank you for reminding me to reorder my business cards, I have had that on my list for two weeks now :) Can’t wait to check out your etsy store.

    • Lix Hewett

I hope you like it! I still need to figure out what I even want to do with my business cards – designer and photographer together or separately? Lots of cards or fewer nicer ones? SO HARD.

  • Annabel Krantz

Sounds like you’ve made great headway mapping out what you need to do to get things in order! I’m going to try and follow your lead, and get things sorted. Good luck getting everything done!

    • Lix Hewett

I’m still working on it, but laying it all out was a start! Good luck to you too!

What happened with the person you are living with now?

    • Lix Hewett

She wants someone who’s had a full-time job for a while, doesn’t like my dietary restrictions (she wants someone she can cook for and I’m picky about what I’ll eat), and thinks living with someone who has anxiety will be bad for her? Because other people being anxious makes her anxious? She let me know last Wednesday, so at least I had time to flathunt, but I’m still disappointed because I love the place and I think we have a lot in common and we worked out the financial thing before I even moved in, until she talked to her father and he decided it had to be someone who’d had a full-time job for a while. It took me a while to work through my feelings because she got my hopes up really, really high the first weekend I was here – we went grocery-shopping, we ate together, we started watching the BBC Pride and Prejudice mini (we finished it today), we measured my room to see what size a desk would fit in there, we were talking about long-term. And then on Monday, all of a sudden, she seemed tired and distant and reserved and… yeah. It’s been weird. Good sometimes, and okay, but weird.

      • amitygardens

Aw. That sucks. I’m sorry. Hopefully you’ll find a new place that it’ll be a great fit. Let me know if you need another reference or anything.

        • Lix Hewett

Yeah. At least I found the homestay fairly easily – I don’t love it 100% and I’m worried about money a bit, but at least I got to book a place and stop worrying on Saturday and I’ve got till July 13 set in stone. Ish. Thank you. <3 Here's hoping "or anything" doesn't end up being "I'm homeless, please let me crash at yours," lol.

  • Lix Hewett

I’ve been so busy I haven’t even had a chance to FEEL busy… though I do occasionally feel swamped and overwhelmed and super worried, siiiiigh. Tuesdays are stupid. :p

  • Karen Peterson

How exciting that you set a goal to move to London and you did it! I think that’s so awesome.

You have great goals for June. I’m sure you’ll have an awesome month!

    • Lix Hewett

      I still can’t believe it! I won’t believe it until I have a six-month+ lease probably, haha.

      Hopefully we both will!
