Photography: Casual Portrait Photography With Christine Cherry

posted on September 24, 2014

Christine Cherry by Lix Hewett Photography | London Portrait Photographer

Is this my first time posting portrait photography on the blog? I think it may be! These are just some snaps I took at the end of a shoot with a fellow photographer — I actually modeled for her, and I shot these in about ten minutes just before she headed back to the tube station. You can see what we did together here and here.

I finally got around to editing the photos I took that day, and I wanted to share them here. I’ve got quite a sizable backlog of photos to edit, portrait and otherwise, and a new portfolio launching soon, so these posts are going to become a regular feature here in the coming weeks, months… possibly years. Photography is currently my least profitable line of work, but somehow, it remains my favorite. A sign that I need to keep working to make it profitable, right? Right.

I really like the candidness (is that word? I imght have made that up) of that last one. Her eyes are such a pretty colour!

    • Lix Hewett

Thanks! I think it’s a real word – makes sense anyway!

  • Nancy

I love a good black and white outfit. That dress looks so nice on you, and the sunnies, too. That last photo of you is so pretty.

    • Lix Hewett

Oh, that’s not me, I just took the pictures. :) Christine (who is a photographer; I actually modeled for her before we shot these) did look great though!

  • Chelsea

She is gorgeous! I’ve always wanted to have portraits like this done :)

    • Lix Hewett

Someone saw us at the supermarket with our cameras and asked who was doing the modeling, which was very telling, haha. Thanks for stopping by. :)

  • Andi Fisher

Great photos, that dress looks so comfortable!

  • Angelic @ SimplySinova.com

I love that dress! I love how organic and real (if that makes sense) these pictures look! They don’t look too staged or posed! You’re an AMAZING photographer!

    • Lix Hewett

Thanks so much! I love that you mentioned that because, I mean, this was REALLY casual, like, “hang on, let me take some pics of you before you leave” casual, but one of my aims with portrait photography is to take shots where the subject looks good AND recognizable. I see a lot of photographers do portrait shoots where the client gets all dolled up and ends up looking like an emotionless grandma portrait, if *that* makes any sense, or just completely unlike themselves. That’s not what I want to do as a portrait photog.

  • Frances Rose

    Really nice job!

  • Amby Felix

    She’s super pretty!

beautiful! such a cute dress! love!

  • Brenda Lawrence

You got these shots in 10 minutes! Wow! You look great in them!

    • Lix Hewett

That’s not me, I took the photos. ;) The woman in them is Christine – I did some modeling for her (she’s a photographer too) and at the end of the shoot, I took some pictures of her for my own portfolio slash for fun. I always fizzle out during long shoots actually, I think short and sweet is more my speed, both as a photog and as a model.

  • Jessica at Team Wiking

Great photos. I love the natural posing, and my favorite is the one on the steps!

  • Erica

Such great shots, and your dress is so cute! :)

  • Carly Anderson

These are such beautiful photos! And that’s a cute dress!

  • Marissa Bartlett

Really awesome photos! I love photography too! But it definitely doesn’t make me any money, Hopefully one day though :) Really loving the contrast of the green to the dress super pretty!

I love that last photo! She looks really pretty! Keep at it. It’s probably because you love it so much that it’s taking a while – you want to make it perfect!

that’s some of it, for sure. Another thing is I can’t afford the equipment I want (I want a lens with a larger aperture – looking at one of the cheapest, the 50mm f/1.8 – and a camera body that produces higher quality photos, but that’s so out of budget it might as well be on the moon) and another is I can’t afford to give away much of my time or pay for courses or anything when I could be doing paid design work or working on my blog, which turns way more of a profit. But I’ve acquired a good backlog of photos over the summer, so hopefully I can put together a nice portfolio and start getting paid work soonish.

  • songbirdsandbuttons

that dress is gorgeous – you’re doing great!

    • Lix Hewett

      thanks!

  • Weekends With Winter

Love these photos, you have a great eye. Yes if it’s your most enjoyable you should def be putting your all into it :)

    • Lix Hewett

I’m putting … my some into it, I guess? Like, yeah, it’s my dream job, living off portraiture and weddings, but right now I have to live off something and I suck at time management so I do a lot more design work and modeling and blogging and things that I actually get paid for than I do photography. I’ve still managed to build up a truly astounding backlog over the past five months, astounding in sheer number of photos I mean, so that should keep me busy for a while. Lots to edit to my new portfolio so I can launch all properlike.

  • Chrissy Jordan

I love your editing. So light and airy.

    • Lix Hewett

      Thank you! x
