Style: New Haircut & Firmoo Glasses

posted on October 7, 2014

So I chopped off my hair.

As usual, I started out subtle, just a couple of inches off, nothing much. But it was boring, and I was bored. So I cut off some more, hollowed out some bits, layered some others, and because my hair curls in a very forgiving way, nothing went terribly wrong that I could see.

(I’ve been cutting my own hair for about six, seven years now. My self-esteem does funny things when I go to a salon, and I used to be really serious and specific about my hair. Cutting it myself allowed me a sense of freedom and flexibility that made a huge difference, and also saved me money. Win win.)

Then I flipped my part, and this is what I look like now.

Or, okay, this is what I looked like on Sunday after pulling an all-nighter, still sick — note the chapped lips — and wearing my new (ish) glasses c/o Firmoo.

The hoodie is from H&M and the white tee is from C&A, if anyone wants to know. Laundry day. (I do like that hoodie, but the white tee is no longer all that white.) But more importantly, my new Firmoo glasses!

I lost my old black pair the second day I was in London — I put them in my pocket to take pictures (they get in the way sometimes), went back to the hotel, went to wash my face, and they were gone, never to be seen again. I did have another pair of black glasses, but they were a pair I kept as a spare since they made me look like a bug. I have a small head, you see. I’m limited to the petite department, and I didn’t know that existed at the time.

So I had a chance to work with Firmoo, and I took the opportunity to get a new pair of black glasses. Because, I don’t know if you know this, but I love black glasses. They’re simple, they go with my leather jacket, they’re comfortable. To me. I know it’s weird to say a color is comfortable, but there you go.

When I first got the glasses, they actually seemed a little big, so I put them in a drawer to take out at a later date to photograph. That later date was Sunday, when I was so sleep-deprived I couldn’t put a coherent sentence together, which was obviously the perfect time to empty the top of my dresser and set up a product shooting station. Which I did. The selfies need a little work, but I’ve always sucked at using the self-timer, so we’ll make do.

My point, which got lost in the rambling there, is that I pulled them out again… and I actually love them now! I don’t know if it’s the haircut — maybe it makes my face look bigger? — but they’re so comfortable and subtle and yes. I am into them.

I’ve wanted to try Firmoo for a while — they have a program where you get your first pair of glasses free; you just have to pay shipping — and I’m not disappointed. The ordering process was easy, the glasses got to me despite initially giving out the wrong address (I hadn’t moved yet, and got the flat number wrong), and the packaging is really very sweet. Have you seen that case? It would only be better if it closed properly, but I chalk that up to rough handling in delivery. I love the cleaning cloth (is that also weird to say? I like the texture! They’re not all the same), and not pictured is a spectacles pouch — which will be useful for shoots, probably. They also come with a tiny little screwdriver.

All in all, I’m pleased with the product and service, and I look forward to wearing the glasses regularly now that I think I look good in them.

Do you wear glasses? What’s your favorite color to wear?

Disclosure: I was provided with a pair of glasses for the purpose of an honest review.

I think you look great, those glasses suit you and you did a great job with the hair too. I hate going to the hairdressers and I’ve cut my own hair for ages :) I only need glasses to read but I love picking them out, my current pair are black with turquoise arms and I love them.

    • Lix Hewett

Thank you! Great to meet a fellow self-hair-cutter. :)

  • Andi Fisher

I wear glasses, addicted to them, have dozens – I have three red pairs which are my favorite!

    • Lix Hewett

I don’t think I round a dozen yet, but I can see how you’d get there! I have a red pair back in Spain, left it behind since it never got much use. I need more color in my wardrobe.

  • Nancy

I don’t wear glasses, but I do have 2 pairs of non-prescriptions that I LOVE wearing. My husband thinks I’m nuts for wanting to wear them.

    • Lix Hewett

Psh, glasses are an awesome accessory. Even if you don’t need them to see!

  • Ruthy T.

i love your glasses! it’s so funny…I got lasik over 10 years ago but now i totally want glasses!

    • Lix Hewett

I was lucky-ish in that I was already 17 or 18 and loved the look of glasses when I started needing them. My sister went through a phase when she was embarrassed of them, waaaay back when she was a kid. I don’t think she wants rid of them anymore, they’re such a big part of her.

  • Chelsea

I have a few pairs from Firmoo and I love them all. I have like, 5 or 6 pairs of glasses (hey, they’re an accessory too haha) and they all in shades of black or brown :)

    • Lix Hewett

When I discovered Zennioptical last year – after years of reaaally needing to renew my prescription and get stronger glasses – I got four pairs on the spot. Only brought two of those with me to London, but there was one black, two silver and one red. The pair I default to these days is one of the silver ones. :) Then I’ve got a tortoise pair from SpecsPost, and now these. Totally an accessory! Plus, I can’t see without them. :p

  • Michelle

I love those glasses! I need to get a new pair myself pretty soon and I think I’ll check Firmoo out. Cute haircut too! :)

    • Lix Hewett

      Thank you!

  • Susan @ 2catsandchloe

Great glasses! They look awesome on you! I just got glasses from firmoo today! :)

    • Lix Hewett

      Yay o/ Thanks!

  • Candace

LOVE those glasses!! you look adorable!

    • Lix Hewett

      Thank you so much!

  • Lindsay

Your hair looks great! I hate going to salons and having to sit in a chair staring at myself and making small talk so I just never cut it and deal with it being long, haha!

    • Lix Hewett

That was me when I was a teenager! I put off getting my hair cut for MONTHS and I’m not the most observant of people so I really can’t tell when I have split ends and the like. But I’ve always been the kind of person who finds haircuts cathartic so I’m glad I took the plunge and started doing my own hair.

  • Heather

CUTE glasses! I wish I could pull those off…or remember to wear my glasses when I’m supposed to in the first place! ;)

    • Lix Hewett

I always remember because I can’t see otherwise! Can’t even read on my laptop screen without them.

  • Brenda Lawrence

I just got new glasses too! I’ve been totally obsessed with Warby Parker Glasses!

    • Lix Hewett

Warby Parker glasses look so good but I find it incredibly off-putting that they’re constantly getting bloggers to post about them without compensation.

  • Bintu @ Recipes From A Pantry

Great chopped hair and the glasses suit you too.

    • Lix Hewett

      Thank you!

  • Rebekah

Fabulous glasses and your hair looks great! I have thin rimmed black vogue glasses, they’re the only ones I’ve found that look relatively okay on me.

    • Lix Hewett

Ohh, I love that style! I had a pair like that for years. It was in fact the only pair I had for years before I discovered low-cost glasses.

  • Betsy

Those look great on you! I don’t wear glasses but definitely need to get my eyes checked.

    • Lix Hewett

      Thanks!

  • B. Britnell

I almost always have my contacts in but when I do HAVE to wear my glasses I hate it because they’re SO ugly. hah. I really need to get a new pair and I love those black ones!

    • Lix Hewett

Aww! I’m always confused when people have glasses they don’t like – did you just grow out of love with them? Or were you given them somehow?

  • Kristine Foley

Yay for a fresh cut! And I love my Firmoo glasses! Seriously digging the frames you choose!

    • Lix Hewett

I’m really pleased with them! thanks for stopping by!

  • Glamour-Zine

love your frames! I need a new pair of glasses

    • Lix Hewett

I feel like I always need a new pair of glasses. :)

  • Lyssadawson

Yes! I love firmoo glasses! SO CUTE!

    • Lix Hewett

      thank you!

  • Jessica at Team Wiking

Those glasses look great on you! And your hair looks good. Mine is super long, I could probably never cut it on my own.

  • Katie

love the new glasses, they do suit you. I can’t believe you cut your own hair! I would not trust myself with a pair of scissors if you paid me!

    Katie <3

  • Beth@FrugalFroggie

I don’t wear glasses. But your glasses look so nice on your. And I am so impressed that you cut your own hair.

  • Sarah @girlfriendshoes

The glasses seem to totally suit you. Your hair looks great as well.

  • esther julee

the glasses look so good on you! :) i only wear glasses when i’m driving.. only bc i find it extremely annoying to have something on my face and sometimes in the way. it doesn’t help that i’m semi-blind and can never see people.. but it’s also the perfect excuse not to be outgoing! haha

  • Sara Strauss

Love the haircut and the new glasses! These glasses have that modern-meets-vintage look! They look great on you!
    ~Sara

  • Miss Angie

I love your haircut and your glasses! :D

  • Astrid

I got my glasses through firmoo too!! Love the frames you chose.

  • Camesha

I am the odd person that wears glasses as an accessory. It drives my husband nuts because he actually needs glasses.

    • Lix Hewett

Pshhhhh. Everyone can wear glasses. I actually think it’s good that they’ve become a fashion accessory – at least I feel like people are much less likely to make fun of kids who wear glasses now. Maybe that’s just because I’m not around kids anymore but it took my sister ages to be proud of her glasses and it always made me sad because I think of words like ‘four-eyed’ as a fond compliment. (I… don’t even know. I knew it bothered her though so I didn’t use it. I’m not that much of a dick.)

  • Taralyn Parker

Love the glasses! I’ve had black, brown, and blue frames!

    • Lix Hewett

Ooh, I’ve never had blue frames! The closest I have to brown are tortoise, but I think it counts. My sister’s always been more adventurous – she had red glasses for the longest time and her last pair is blue. Really need to get her a new one sometime though!

  • Alice

I used to wear glasses when I was little, but they looked odd on my face and my mum used to buy the biggest, ugliest green frames, so I used to hide them under the sofa in the hopes someone would break them. unfortunately you get free glasses for children so it was always futile! :) these are great frames though. I’d be too scared to cut my own hair but you’ve clearly mastered it!

  • Amanda Hicks

Those glasses look great on you! I’m so glad glasses are the “in thing”!
