Six Fashion Bloggers I Love

posted on October 19, 2013

fashionbloggersilove

This post started out as 6 Blogger Closets I’d Like To Raid — I saw a post like that over at Style Honestly and thought it was a super sweet idea, so I asked Tiffany if I could borrow the idea and she said yes! Along the way, though, it occurred to me that more than wanting to raid these women’s closets, I just wanted to look at them forever, so I dropped the raiding and amped the loving.

Which is not to say I wouldn’t raid their closets, because I would. And their address books. But I only have that thought here and there, usually about specific pieces. What I like about these blogs is that they feature gorgeous ladies wearing gorgeous outfits in gorgeous photographs, and let’s be real, that’s almost all I look for in a blog.

Outfit Post: Grays & Bows

These pictures are awful and grainy and this outfit is very simple, but I’m posting anyway because the hat is adorable. Big bow! Which you may recognize from my sidebar picture, among other social media profiles. Comfiest, prettiest, most wonderfully fitting hat that it is. I put it on and I feel complete.

…look, I’ve had a weird day, I’m allowed to wax poetic about my cloche for a bit.

Outfit Post: Still My Heart Has Wings

posted on October 9, 2013

Don’t let the sunlight fool you: I froze my little shins off. I may or may not have been holed up for over a week (this is not even a record) and I didn’t believe my mom when she said I should put on an actual jacket. It was nowhere near as bad as the time I went out to shoot a blue knit dress — with jeans under it and my coat on — last January, but my Raynaud’s syndrome did rear its ugly little head a bit.

Anyway, yay, outfit post! Yay, four outfits down and still twenty-six (ha ha ha) to go on that 30×30 challenge I wanted to be done with by the end of October. Ah well, I have multiple pairs of jeans on the list. And leg warmers in my sock drawer. I’ll deal.

The standout piece in this outfit is obviously the black and white rose-patterned dress by Gina Louise, which can be found on her website or here on Etsy. It’s a lovely, super flattering dress made in a slightly stretchy heavy cotton fabric, and it slips on like a glove.

Wishlist: Coats I Can’t Afford (Except Maybe No. 4, But Frankly That’s Still Pushing It)

posted on October 9, 2013

Because sometimes a girl gets bored and wants to try out her SkimLinks plugin. (If it works, that means I may earn a tiny commission from anything you purchase using my links. If it doesn’t work, it means you get to ogle some pretty coats you may or may not be able to afford either. You’re welcome.)

wishlist-coats

1. T. Tahari ‘Izzy’ Belted Tweed Coat in Mink from Nordstrom ($219.9)
2. DKNY Knit Collar Babydoll Coat in Charcoal from Nordstrom ($139.9)
3. DKNY Belted Plaid Tweed Coat in Grey  from Nordstrom ($198)
4. Glad Student Coat in Grey from Modcloth ($67.99)
5. Houndstooth Coat from Modcloth ($99.99)
6. Winterberry Tart Coat from Modcloth ($149.99)
7. Tory Burch Keegan Long Tweed Jacket from Cusp ($495)
8. Navy Leather Jacket from Miss Selfridge (€215)
9. Dorothy Leather Moto Jacket in Jade from Neiman Marcus ($518)

In other words — uh, in actual words — I’m on a green and gray kick, with red popping in here and there because red is always welcome. There is no doubt about that. Now, will I ever actually get a new winter coat? That’s another story. I’m still wearing t-shirts here, so I have a little time to go before I remember how much I hate the two coats I own.

Are you getting a new coat this year? Are you gravitating toward any particular colors?

A Budgeting Affair

posted on September 26, 2013

Or a prioritized wishlist — depends on the angle you look at it. I wanted to write it down so I thought I’d go ahead and blog about it.

So if you’ve known me for a bit, you know I’m really strapped for money — my mom is on welfare and that’s basically the family’s sole source of income (though my grandma and aunt help us out), so if I want to invest in my work, I have to figure that out myself. Which is what I’ve been doing this year, little by little. Priority #0 was a new laptop, which I got through my Indiegogo campaign, so this is some of what I’ve got left now, somewhat in order:
priority-list

  1. Custom-printed Spoonflower fabric (and other supplies, not pictured) for my campaign rewards.
  2. A tripod for my Canon and a remote control so I don’t have to depend on my mom for product modeling and outfit shoots. The tripod will come in handy for more than that, though, I’m sure.
  3. A serger machine. This is a Bernette 610D from Bernina, which I’ve heard great things about from seamstresses, but I don’t have my heart set on any particular one.
  4. A new winter coat, preferably gray or green. This one is from Ruche, which has the most gorgeous selection of clothing.
  5. This — is not exactly what it looks like, but basically: going legal as self-employed. I can register for taxes fine, but to be officially self-employed, I have to register for social security fees, which are over 500€ a month, which is about seven times what I’ve made all year (Indiegogo campaign notwithstanding). I want to do this properly, but I can’t afford to do this properly, but I’d like to at some point. Even though a part of me would like to think I’ll be in England by that point, which means I should research their self-employment requirements and fees. I’m so new at all of this, you guys. It’s terrifying. But anyway, for starters, I should renew my expired ID.
  6. A printer. Not necessarily large format, since I can get those prints at my lab and I do love their quality — but a printer for graphic design and photo cards would be pretty fantastic. This one is an Epson, which I’ve heard  great things about from photographers. Mostly about the Stylus range, and this one is a workforce printer, but I think that would work all right for my current purposes.
  7. A new lens. I haven’t settled on one, but anything’s better than the 18-35 mm default my Canon came with.
  8. Plane tickets! To London to meet Annemari in January or February, with the added cost of a place to stay… and possibly no return ticket for me. Who knows, y’all. Again with the terrifying, but I want to relocate so badly, even if I’d miss my cat and my mom and my sister with a passion. But I feel like it’d be the least scary way to move there, not really meaning to stay and then just seeing how it goes. I don’t know.

A place of my own while I get there (until I get my room back to myself in December or January) wouldn’t be amiss, either. Even if it’s a tiny studio apartment. As long as I’m alone, I’m good.

So that’s my priority list, for anyone wondering why I rarely buy anything and why, when I spend money, I feel sort of like shit. I’ve been considering running a follow-up campaign when I’m done with these rewards to fund the serger and the fabric, but the last campaign was a huge headache so I’m not sure about that. I’ll see how the shop does first. I’ve also been thinking about doing a fixed-funding campaign later on to fund my move to the UK where all the rewards are photo shoots (product, portrait, etc.), which I really like the thought of. But again, that’s for later. (Even though pushing a move earlier would mean postponing the printer — weight — and the social security registration, possibly.)

Anyway, right now, this is what I’m looking at. If you have any advice for getting these things or want to recommend any particular brand or model, I’m all ears! Otherwise, I’d love to know what you’re currently prioritizing — are you saving for anything? What do you have your eye on?

Outfit Post: Edge of Black

posted on September 20, 2013

I always feel a bit weird posting videos because there’s such a striking contrast in quality between them and the rest of the content of my blog — I like to think I’m a pretty good writer, but I know I write well at the very least, and all my photos are taken with my DSLR and carefully edited. Then I post a video I filmed with the built-in camera on my laptop (the only one I have available, and iMovie won’t recognize it now so I have to shoot in Photo Booth) and the questionable quality hits me in the face. And I feel like it drags the whole blog down with it. Is that weird? Either way I don’t want my only post on a given day to be one I feel drags the quality of my blog down, so I’m posting something else as well. Helps that I had it shot and edited already!

Friday Loves: On Saturday Afternoons

posted on September 14, 2013

Yeah, I made my lateness into a theme. And I’m awfully in love with this week’s board.

fridayloves0913

1. Cropped jacket from AliceCloset | 2. Red leaves photograph from MollysMuses
3. Acorn earrings from apocketofposies | 4. Dress from threadbeat
5 & 6. Dress and jacket from Alice’s Pig

Definitely in a autumn mood already, though I wish it were a bit cooler. The weather’s good for being indoors, at least. And I just found Alice’s Pig through this post on Briar Rose and I am in love. If only I had money, etc. etc.

Outfit Post: The Roaring Blues

posted on September 8, 2013

20130907-30x30-2-06

I have an overshooting problem. I’m sorry! I just can’t help myself. For some reason, when I’m editing photos, I always feel like there aren’t enough good ones, and then I go rename the files something meaningful and I realize I wound up with 21, and I love them all. Or at least I like them all about the same. Narrowing them down, however minimally, is a painful process.

Anyway, this is my second outfit for the 30×30 remix challenge! I can already tell I’m going to be relying quite heavily on accessories to inspire me. Where Ready to Fall had a braided floral crown from The Evergreen Nest, The Roaring Blues features a beautiful made-to-measure cloche hat by the amazing Nadine of hiddenNZ. I’m obsessed with cloche hats, and I’m still over the moon about having not one but two (sidebar pic!) that are gorgeous and season-nonspecific (warm for winter — and deliberately warm over the ears — but completely comfortable in September, too!) and fit my tiny head perfectly.

Outfit Post: Ready to Fall

This is my first post for the 30×30 remix challenge! I’ll be sharing a list of the items I picked sometime this week as well. For my first outfit, I was fairly lazy — as usual — and paired up a comfortable dress with a flower crown I got in May and hadn’t yet got around to wearing. I had the pleasure of working with Mary Katherine from The Evergreen Nest on Etsy — highly recommend you check out her shop if you like flower crowns or anything fairy-related! My bracelet was also made by an Etsy seller, Melissa of You Can Sparkle.

Back to this outfit, this is the first time I’ve shot a full-body outfit since around May; I’m a bit rusty. I really need to find a guinea pig to model for me so I can learn how to do this then transfer the info onto my mom (and use it myself once I’ve got a tripod. Oh, if only). But it was fun and an excellent start to the month to get going right away on all my projects.
